With millions of websites on the web today, there is no guarantee that your website will rank first on Google and other major search engines – but there are many simple things you can do to outrank your competitors and improve your Google ranking.

In this article, I am going back to SEO basics to help you understand website ranking rules and show you how to increase your website popularity.

This ultimately will help you learn how to optimize your website for both search algorithm robots and us humans.

Website Rankings and Google Rankings = More Conversion

Here are the 23 ways to boost your website ranking:

1. Choose the right URL

Before you register a domain name, you need to select a domain name that is relevant to your business. The domain name should also be easy to remember. Your URL is the address your visitors will type. For instance, if you are somebody selling shoes it would be beneficial to have shoes in the main URL because that is where search engines look first to understand your website and rank it.

A good domain should include your business name and a keyword that is relevant to your business. It is also important that your URLs are clean i.e. make sure they are simple and understandable.

2. Create Title and Meta Description for Each Page

Most people don’t know, or at least don’t optimize for it, but creating title and descriptions for each page is one of the best steps to a higher website ranking. You can create brief texts that clearly and accurately describe your business, ideally with some keywords and phrases.

If you have ever hovered over a tab on your browser and a short phrase popped up under your mouse – that is the title of the page. Though the description is not visible, it is essential for website ranking!

URL Description key for website ranking

The title and description are among the first things search engines uses to determine your website’s rank. So know that you know your title and meta description will appear when your site pops up in the search engine, here’s a trick:

Type the title of your article into Google and check out what appears!

Let’s use: Ways to Boost your Website Ranking (Don’t worry about the number if it’s a list post)

Google Ranking - Google search example

As you can see from the areas that are underlined with red, there are a few key traits and patterns that these top results are displaying.

Such as, a keyphrase Google Ranking and Google Rank, some also include “increase your” “ranks” “your website” in the meta description and one has “Boost your websites” in the url.

What does this mean to you?

Not only does it show you which sites are ranking high for the title of your article it also gives you new ideas on how you can write your meta description even better!

3. Your Website Has to Be About the User

For effective website rankings, your website has to be about users. The main reason why Google keeps changing algorithms and rolling out updates is to provide high-quality, and the most relevant search results possible. So, the content of your website must be user-friendly.

Check out: 25 reasons why people are leaving your website!

When it comes to boosting your website ranking through SEO, start by looking at the website from the user’s perspective.

Does your site offer the best and the most relevant information for a given search term?

If not, you need to work on it. Here’s 21 Important Website Tips.

4. Focus on Quality Content

If you check most websites today; whether it is a blog or a business website, most of them are upping their games. Most business websites now have a blog section where they aim at providing solutions to the user problems and direct them to the links where they will sell their product to them.

It is not enough to publish just any content optimized for keywords, but the quality of your website’s content is a big factor for website ranking. Since Google Panda update, Google has started screening out sites publishing long but low-quality content.

It’s better to have a few high-quality pages than many low-quality pages.

If you want website traffic, blogging remains the best way to boost your Google ranking. If you have website pages or blogs that are negatively impacting your website, you should consider removing them. It will help your site move up the rankings.

5. Do Proper On-Page SEO to Boost Your Website Ranking

One way to get website traffic is by implementing a proper on-page SEO strategy.

Here is how to do proper on-page SEO:

  •    Start your title tag with your targeted keyword.
  •    Let your keyword appear in the first 100 words, make it look natural.
  •    Use outbound links. (Links that direct you to another page) Outbound links help Google identify your content as valid and informative. This is vital to a high website ranking. But remember that the outbound links must be relevant to your content and must be authentic, high-quality sources. One way to find trusted sources is by looking for a High DA (Domain Authority) and you can use a tool like the MozBar to find this out, the closer a site is to 100 the more trustworthy it is.

  •    Write a catchy Meta description (Tip #2) that can make people click your link when it pops up in the search engine. You should also include your main keyword in your Meta description.
  •    Your targeted keywords should appear in your URL.
  •    Add keywords to each post strategically, include LSI Keywords (Tip #11)

6. Post long content

Writing longer content gives you the chance to give more value. Not just any long from content, but a quality and informative content. Longer content helps improve your website ranking. You should always target at least 1000 words per article, but make it informative as possible.

Longer content will give you a chance to add more keywords, but you should also make the content very informative.

7. Use Internal Links for a Higher Website Ranking

To reduce your site bounce rate, internal linking is paramount.

What is interlinking?

Interlinking is the process of linking pages from within a website or blog. Contextual interlinks (which are within the text body) are one of the more powerful linking options as they help boost page visits and promote a higher PA (Page Authority).

Interlink-example

One of the factors for website ranking has to do with the time people spend on your website. If people are not spending much time on your website, Google will count your site as irrelevant. Interlinking will keep people on your website for a longer time. Keep in mind it’s not just the interlinking of any article, but articles related to what brought the visitor to your site.

Google bots are designed to behave like a human to evaluate your site. So, smart linking of pages will help crawlers find your website. You wonder why Wikipedia ranks for so many different keywords; it’s because of the interlinking.

8. Add Alt Text to All Your Images

It is not easy for search engine to find an image on your site but the bots always look for “alt text” to rank the images on your site.

What Are Alt Tags?

Essentially an alt tag allows images to become more accessible to not only search engines but also your site viewers.

When you are writing your alt text, ensure your keywords appear in the text. Here’s a run down from Google

alternative text example wordpress

9. Give Your Website Structure with the Right Headers

It is important that each page on your site has a title, subtitle, etc. This will allow search engines to understand your site easily when they scan your site. The most relevant are the titles of your pages which you should define in the Text Editor of your WordPress site. Use H1 in all your pages to boost your website ranking.

You should also follow your H1 with H2, H3 tags and so on. If your text structure is clear enough, it will be easy for search engines to crawl your site.

Examples of when to use tags:

H1 = Main Title of a blog or page
H2 = Sub Titles such as each of the points in this post
H3 = Headers that are there to reinforce or provide more depth on the sub titles, the H2’s.

10. Target Longtail Keywords with Less Competition

You can drastically increase your website traffic using longtail keywords. Longtail keywords are more specific and are, you guessed it, longer than “head” keywords.

Longtail keywords are less competitive than the short keywords. If you want to get more website traffic, start optimizing for longtail keywords. Why? In most cases it will be easier to rank longtail keywords quickly, compared to short keywords. The head keywords are always competitive and next to impossible to rank your website for them. And what’s this mean? More leads for your business!

You can target longtail version of the single keyword you want to rank your website for. For instance; instead of ranking for a head keyword such as “SEO,” you should try to rank for a longtail keyword such as “basic SEO tips for beginners.”

Answer the Public is a great tool to put your header keywords into, check out the term “SEO” I just mentioned:

SEO example from answer the public

As you can see it provides a lot of different long tail search queries that can then be inputted into your content marketing strategy.

11. Use LSI Keywords in Your Content

Have ever you ever noticed related searches that are always below the Google search? Those are the LSI keywords.

What does LSI stand for? Latent Semantic Indexing.

LSI Keywords - Website Ranking

They are the variations and synonyms of your main keywords. LSI keywords are part of what Google algorithm uses to understand search habits to ensure users get the best quality content when they search a keyword. Try to place 2-3 of these LSI keywords into your content.

12. Page Load Speed

Both Bing and Google take page loading speed serious when ranking your site. If your page is slow to load, users may leave, and it will increase your bounce rate. This could hurt your website ranking.

Here are a few different ways you can increase your page load speed:

  • Making sure your code is streamlined and clean
  • Use of caching plugins
  • Reducing the number of plugins
  • Optimizing image sizes and minimizing redirects

How do I test my Page loading speed?

You can check the speed of your website with Google PageSpeed Insights. Another site that you can use for this is GT metrix. Both provide insights on how you can increase the loading speed of your website.

13. Make Your Site Mobile Friendly

Nowadays, a lot of people visit websites on their phones, hence the need for a mobile friendly website. The mobile-friendly website should properly display in mobile phones of different types. This means, users visiting from a mobile phone do not have to zoom and pinch to read the content of your website or click links.

Google recommended setup is Fluid Responsive Design. This type of design dynamically resizes websites to fit the width of any device. So, if you have a mobile friendly website, viewers will love it, and you will get more website traffic and have a lower bounce rate.

15. Make the Most of Social Media, Social Search, and Social Sharing

It is difficult to explain the impact of Facebook and Twitter on Google search results, but at least we know Google is showing real-time social sharing in the search results.

The addition of Google +1 button and the Google users ability to block any sites they found annoying takes this a step further. It is currently not clear how Google is using their +1 button in the algorithms, but they have made it clear that users blocking a site can cause a negative impact on returns. This emphasizes the importance of quality content.

The Social Impact on SEO

Targeted website traffic increases with a proper social sharing strategy. According to Google they are not currently factoring social signals when ranking web pages, but this doesn’t mean you should do away with social.

Social search engines can drive traffic to your website, so post relevant content in Linkedin Groups, Twitter, Facebook, Quora, Medium and Reddit to generate quality social shares, drive site traffic and time on site.

Ultimately being on social helps build your brand exposure and influence your page rank.

16. Broken Link Building

Building broken links is a tactic used to identify broken links on other websites in your business niche. The main reason for this is to get a broken link replaced with an active link that will point to your content.

Nobody likes to have broken links on their website. This technique offers a significant opportunity for SEO link building. This is how it works; if you find a broken link on a topically related website, you will immediately contact the owner of the website and inform him. Since you are doing the website owner a big favor by telling him he has a broken link on his website; you can also request a replacement with the link to your relevant content. But, keep in mind, your content must be useful and informative.

Here’s an example outreach:

How to outreach - example email

I know your next question is “how do I find broken links?” I will recommend a free tool; it’s actually a Google Chrome extension called Check My Link. You need to install it in your Google Chrome browser. After installing it, you will see a checkmark icon beside your address bar, click on it, and it will scan all the links on a particular web page. It will highlight a dead or broken link in red, and you will also see error 404 beside the link.

17. Guestographics Method of Boosting Website Ranking for Website Traffic

With the guestographics method, you don’t need to beg other people to share your infographic. Follow these steps:

1.Post an infographic on your website

Before you get to posting, you need to get the infographic developed. Stick with an easy to digest amount of tips/ points. I suggest going with around 5-10 key points, that allows for a visual experience that is easy to follow and not over crowded!

Here are three ways to develop an infographic

  • Use Venngage – Free infographic maker, lots of templates
  • Use Piktochart – Tons of templates, and a simple interface
  • Use Canva – Templates, images, and a great interface

2. Find sites that write about the topic of your infographic

This is quite simple really, look through the top Google rankings on the topic of your infographic, and reach out to each respective site! Repeat this by going through the LSI keywords.

3. Show your infographic to them

When you reach out, send off a short email asking to see if they would be interested in checking out your infographic.

4. Offer them quality content

Keep the content short, but also tailored towards the site and their audience.

5. Get your contextual backlinks in return

Ensure you link back to your site where the original infographic is located.

Here’s even more ways to boost search engine presence.

18. Use the Skyscraper Technique

The skyscraper is now a popular technique and an effective method to improve your website ranking in the search engines. This technique, in a nutshell, involves three steps, which include:

  •    Finding a linkable asset that is always worthy of use and very informative. Look for outdated content that is ranking high and…
  •    Improve on what already exists by making it longer, more useful, more updated, better designed and with more relevant keywords
  •    Finally, reach out to people who have shared the content that is currently ranking high. Instead of reaching out to everybody, target your approach by using Buzzsumo. This will allow you to view the sharers of the content giving you the opportunity to reach out in a targeted manner.
  • You can also use NinjaOutreach to look for the most shared content in your niche, find out who the sharers are, and automatically do your outreach to your target audience from the app itself.

19. Do Keyword Research

This is a topic on its own, but I will try to summarize it. To improve your website ranking in a right and effective way, you need to do keyword research. If you don’t understand how keywords research works, you won’t be able to get your website to the first page of Google.

How Do I Build Quality Backlinks?

  • Gain guest blogging opportunities and link back to your website with a relevant keyword for its anchor text
  • Ask to be a part of a resource page
  • Find broken links and get them fixed! (Tip #16)
  • Develop great content by skyscraping or creating engaging infographics
